MyDogSwag – WooCommerce Maintenance and Search Engine Optimization

May 20, 2022Susan Petracco

MyDogSwag is a labor of love website from Bonny Durkin. Her beloved German shepherd suffered from infected calluses / hygroma, which is a fluid-filled sac on his elbow. She tried other elbow protectors but nothing worked the way she wanted it to. When she discovered there was nothing else available, she designed her signature product.

My Dog Swag

So Bonny invented the K-9 Cuff, an easy-to-use elbow protection harness for dogs that suffer from hygromas, calluses, and other kinds of elbow sores. When customers order a K-9 Cuff, she stitches them by hand to the customer’s specifications.

A special business like that deserves a special website. When Bonny was introduced to NetBlazon, she already had a great site. It just needed a little TLC! And she also needed to get her product in front of more people. That’s why we got everything whipped into shape, improved the content for Google’s algorithms, and started working on outreach campaigns to improve her business.

Improved E-commerce Design

You might not notice much of a difference if you’d visited Bonny’s website before and after our changes. They were subtle, especially on a computer screen. On a phone, everything was pushed really far down and hard to see, though. So we focused on improving the usability for visitors using a smartphone, while keeping a great experience for desktop users.

Easier Ordering Form

Bonny’s products have special details that a shopper needs to complete in order for her to make the K-9 Cuff to fit each individual dog. Each K-9 Cuff product page was a little different, and each one was confusing. We streamlined the product attributes inside WooCommerce to make it easier for customers to complete the ordering process.

On-Site SEO

To improve the visibility of MyDogSwag in Google’s results pages, we first did some keyword research and competitor analysis to see where the site needed improvement. We targeted several keywords and optimized existing content to support those terms. The result was an improvement for each keyword from between 17-90 positions in the Google search results.

SEO Outreach

With a Domain Authority of only 7, there is a lot of room for improvement when it comes to inbound links and other marketing outreach efforts. We have started working with Bonny to help her understand how to perform this outreach, and have identified specific areas of improvement. We’ll update this page with new information as it becomes available!
